What are others saying about the author:
"While I have been expanding my reading genres lately, a good friend told me I should look at this book. I accepted to be an ARC reader and enjoyed every moment. The family feels real in a lot of ways and the unique struggles they suffered through during this time just added to the need to read one more page. The events felt honest and accurate to a point, as this is historical fiction. Overall, not only am I impressed with this book, but I plan on following this author's career to enjoy all their works long into the future."... Aaron R.
"This book took me back to my childhood of Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger, only this time the hero was a former Confederate soldier turned frontiersman. Extensive character development ensures the reader will be invested in each one—good or bad. The author subtly shares historical facts (probably would have enjoyed history a lot more had it been told by this author!) and weaves in the importance of the Christian faith. Simmons is a fascinating storyteller who kept me turning the pages with his action-packed scenes, suspenseful events, and thorough realism of life on the frontier. Well-Done!"... Dorenda D.
"This book has action and plenty of hard knocks like a good western does, while also having the emotional strength of a good drama with relatable characters and a romance you’ll root for. It’s so well-written, with the historical setting and events of the time feeling very real and alive and so inextricably woven into the story that it could not have happened anywhere else, or anytime else but at Calico Rock after the Civil War. Jon Tulley is the kind of man we want to survive and succeed. He’s a good father, a good friend, and he stands up for the rights of the innocent. I’ve read this twice now, and the first time I read it, I actually cried at the selfless sacrifice of a friend and was almost jumping out of my seat at the ending. This is a good book. It’s an adventure!"...Tracy B.
"I’m not usually a fiction reader but this book caught my attention. Glad I bought it. I love history and this story sucked me back into the Civil War era. I could practically smell the black powder during the Battle of Bull Run. I felt like I was part of Jon’s family as they struggled to keep safe & grow through the War & into it’s aftermath. I especially liked how the book featured a unique pistol actually used during the Civil War."...Michael
